So, it was one of those incredibly difficult weeks. We’ve all had them. Those moments where we think, ‘what now God?’, and then BAM- something else attempts to strike us down! It started first on Sunday morning. My husband woke up early, and had thought about going and getting me a surprise coffee. As he walked outside, he realized our car was gone! Our beautiful, practically new car, that someone had gifted to us when we got back to the States, was gone; stolen right off our driveway while we were soundly sleeping! Not the best way to start the week! Then, I had a scare with a German Shepherd dog running at me. Our sink backed up, and then our dryer broke. I know, I know- 1st world nation problems. Needless to say, all these things adding up on top of each other in one week, made for my stress level to be rising.
I went to my in-laws with a basket full of wet laundry. With that determination look in my eyes, I jumped out of our rental car ( remember- our car was stolen!), baby in arms, and thought – “how am I going to manage to carry this basket and baby downstairs to their dryer by myself. But, man was I determined. I struggled but managed a supermom balancing act of baby and basket, got to the front door, and then it dawned on me. ‘Oh, that’s right! I left the spare key to this house, and my own house keys locked inside my home, and all I have are these dumb rental cars keys, and it’s raining!
Locked out in the rain! Quickly, rethinking- ‘ Well at least we can jump back in the car where it’s warm, and just go drive to somewhere warm and walk around until my husband comes to the rescue with spare keys,’ and my toddler puts up a fight! Nope, getting back in the car seat at this point, was not going to happen!
Fascinated by all the amazing puddles of water (a first time experience with puddles), and leaves everywhere to crunch, there was no deterring my daughter from play time in the rain. ‘Ok, I’ll just roll with it,’ I thought. So I led her to some puddles to jump in and out of, and piles of leaves to crunch. She was having the best day of her life! She would crunch a few leaves, but focus back on the puddles. After a while, I started thinking, ‘Why is she so obsessed with these puddles?’
And then I saw it. As I walked up to a puddle with her, suddenly the puddle changed colors. I saw Heavenly colors move in the puddle. The water reflected back a multitude of colors that seemed to be alive. My little girl looked at it, and smiled and laughed with glee!
“I’m inviting you in,” I heard Him say. “Come and taste my Presence for a while, and leave your stress behind.”
I knew in that moment, that God was inviting me in! Inviting me to play, to experience Him, to see new things, and most of all to get refreshed.
So, my daughter and I played for thirty minutes in Heaven’s puddles. We jumped and watched the colors change, and laughed together. It was a wonderful break for me from worrying about all the troubles life seemed to be throwing at us that week. Just to dip into His presence, and laugh and enjoy Him. To lay down the cares of the world, and just breathe in His peace and joy again. Ah, refreshed!
“In Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”~Psalm 16:11
